The theme for this year’s Key West Film Festival is one queerguru whole heartedly approves of : Passion Meets Paradise. This 5 day Event at the southernmost tip of the country has an eclectic program that includes the best of LGBT and Queer cinema with four excellent movies that we highly recommend.
God’s Own Country is THE best gay love story of 2017 ….. and maybe for several years before then. Set on a sheep farm in the wilds of Yorkshire, this award-winning film has often been compared with Brokeback Mountain …..but the main difference is that this British one offers hope. In After Louie a contemporary post AIDS story director Vincent Gagliostro, with a script by Anthony Johnston dares us all to dream again. Stunning performances by Alan Cumming and Zachary Booth (who will be attending the Festival with Gagliostro) give this essential film such authenticity. Check out our full review https:// queerguru.com/2017/06/after-louie, and our interview with the filmmaker recorded this summer https:// queerguru.com/2017/06/after-louies-vincent-gagliostro-on-daring-us-to-dream-again
Sony Pictures Classics have been rapped over the knuckles again this week for trying to promote this exceptional coming-of-age story as anything but gay. They desperately want Call Me By Your Name, a near faultless movie that we totally loved, to be seen by the widest audience possible. It is a worthy ambition that we completely agree with, but running a stealth decidedly homophobic marketing campaign sadly detracts the attention from the movie itself. Check out our full review, and then straight or gay, go book your tickets : https:// queerguru.com/2017/10/call-me-by-your-name
Saturday Church is our 4th choice (there is a 5th LGBT film, but the less said about Trudie Styler’s mess of a movie, the better). This hybrid of a movie : part drama part musical, from openly gay newbie filmmaker Damon Cardasis is a cute and compelling coming-of-age tale which also acts a showcase for an array of remarkable fresh talent .
