KD Lang : ‘Ingenue’ 25 years On

K.D. Lang is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her album “Ingenue” by completing a thirteen date UK and Ireland tour. It was an occasion that Queerguru simply couldn’t pass up on, so we sent Jonny Ward , our Contributing Editor  and very own ‘ingenue’ to go check it out when K.D. made it to London

For those queers old enough to remember, this album was never off our CD players – it was a beautiful searing piece of work KD Lang once described as having the style of a nuclear cabaret.

In addition KD Lang was one of the very first out lesbians to hit the big time and the cover of Vanity Fair featuring her being shaved by Cindy Crawford may be read now by some as queerbaiting but at the time it was revolutionary.]

Tonight her voice has not lost any of the range or pitch perfect accuracy that after listening to these songs for 25 years we actually know VERY well. What’s more, we get a little ad-libbing – not much but enough to make each song sound anew which along with the surprisingly (for a vegan Buddhist!) ribald asides between songs makes the concert electric and worth every penny of the ticket price.

There are moments when she is channelling Johnny Cash or even Leonard Cohen (she covers ‘Hallelujah’) but the last word (as always) should be left to Madonna who said on meeting her “Elvis is alive….and she’s beautiful!”.
