When fashion’s  enfant terrible  Jean-Paul Gaultier announced his retirement after 50 years in the industry, he never said he was giving up on everything.  When he went on Twitter earlier this year it was to tell the world  that his upcoming couture show in Paris would  be his last.

His very successful career to date had many highlights  like starting his eponymous company in 1976, creating Madonna’s iconic “cone bra,” and a seven-year stint as the creative head of Hermès, just to name a few.

His characteristic irreverent style had Gaultier also dressing stars like Beyonce, Rihanna, Kylie MInogue. Lady Gaga, Marion Cotillard, and even Marilyn Manson.

We’re not sure what Gaultier has been up too since that announcement (sadly we are NOT that close) but we did track him down last week when he celebrated The Day of The Dead in Mexico.

In Frida Kahlo’s “Blue House,” which is now a museum, Gaultier  helped organizers put together an offering titled “The Restored Table: Memory and Reencounter.”  Mexico has always been a big source of inspiration for Gaultier especially the Day of the Dead  which he considers is an extraordinary tradition. This joyous celebration of life honors the memory of those who are no longer among us. Inspired by the beautiful skulls he saw during his travels

The offering included pictures of famed artists who died in previous pandemics, including Italian painter Tiziano, who passed away in 1576 when the plague ravaged Venice, and Austria’s Gustav Klimt, who died from the Spanish flu in 1918.
