The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Hollywood has just announced they are hosting the first ever comprehensive Exhibit to celebrate the work of queer auteur filmmaker John Waters. In the past 50 years he has given us some iconic cinema inc Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living, to Cry Baby and Serial Mom. Without Waters, the world would never have got to fall in love with such characters as DIVINE.
In the Exhibit, you will be able to take a trip through the director’s “complete filmography,” with over 400 items, including handwritten scripts, costumes, props, posters, correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and film clips.” The extensive film program will include the filmmaker’s very earliest works, along with his biggest hits like Polyester and Hairspray.
In a statement, Academy Museum curators Jenny He and Dara Jaffe wrote
“Known for pushing the boundaries of ‘good taste,’ Waters has created a canon of high shock-value, high-entertainment movies that have cemented his position as one of the most revered independent auteurs in the history of American movies.“
John Waters: Pope of Trash will be on view at the Academy
Museum of Motion Pictures from September 17, 2023
through August 4, 2024.
