The British born veteran character actor JOHN MAHONEY has died aged 77. Best known in mainstream entertainment as the dad in the sitcom “Frasier” for all of its 11 seasons, portraying an ex-police officer often disturbed by the gentleness of his younger son Niles played by David Hyde Pierce.
Although he never came out publicly as gay, he never had any second thoughts about playing Jack a thoroughly delightful gay West Hollywood bar owner in the 2000 LGBT romantic comedy ‘The Broken Hearts Club’. In fact producer, Greg Berlanti credits Mahoney’s participation as the fact that he actually managed to get the project ‘green-lit’ and off the ground.
Mahoney was nominated for many awards during his career including two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, He appeared in many movies and television shows throughout his career and recently made an appearance in “Hot in Cleveland” opposite Betty White.
To us, however, he will always be Jack.
