In a week that has seen Drag Superstar RU PAUL come under fire for his ill-conceived transphobic remarks proving that he is so out-of-sync with our community’s take on gender, comes this rather wonderful music video from JInkx Monsoon the Season 5 winner of Drag Race. Monsoon (who prefers the pronoun ‘they’) and is singing their heart out to “Just Me (The Gender Binary Blues)” from their recent album, The Ginger Snapped.
Monsoon told Billboard that “Just Me” took multiple interactions regarding gender from the singer’s life and wove them together to represent the “thesis” of the song. “I sat down with Major [Scales, Monsoon’s collaborator] and went through all the most poignant moments in my life that someone has made some kind of comment either positive or negative about my gender and my gender presentation,” they said. “He wove it all together in the song with the main message being that at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter because I’m just me.”
They shot the video last year on the beaches and streets of Provincetown where Monsoon and the Major had been wowing crowds for the summer season at The Art House. Followed by a whole group of friends who all slotted somewhere along the gender spectrum, Monsoon appears in the video in and out of drag: “Now in the past, I’ve caused confusion, it’s true/ But what’s the fun of living life pink or blue?” they sing.
