We guess that Isaac Mizarhi is the nearest thing we know to being a 21st Century Renaissance Man. Back in 1987 he was a Fashion Designer having his first collection presented at a trunk show held by New York department store Bergdorf Goodman
It caught the attention of the world in general and Chanel in particular as in 1992 they bought a stake in the company and began to bankroll its operations. Among Mizrahi’s fans and clients were Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman, Selma Blair, Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Debra Messing and Natalie Portman. Even with trheir support, the Collection did not work, but Isaac Mizrahi for Target, a diffusion line, did become a major commercial success. The collection eventually expanded to include accessories, bedding, housewares, and pet products. Over five years, sales tripled to more than $300 million, establishing Mizrahi as a household name.
He followed this with a career in media with his own chat show on the Oxygen network, followed by the Isaac show on Style Network. His many appearances in numerous television shows and movies since then included Unzipped a documentray about the development of his Fall 1994. At ine time he seemed to a guest star on everythung : he appeared as himself in an espisode of Sex and the City, and in Spin City. He guest starred on the American dramedy series Ugly Betty, in which he played a reporter for the cable channel Fashion TV in the episode “Lose the Boss”. He appeared as himself in The Apprentice season 1 (episode 6) as one of the celebrities supporting an auction for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
Mizrahi however has stated that he sees himself as an entertainer who can sing and act which started ion his Oxygen show when he sang jazz in a nightclub, and lead to his very first session performing at NY’s legendary Cafe Carlyle. Its a prefect paring which has been such an amazing success over the past decade that Mizrahi is noe back with his 10th Anniversary Show called A.I. artificial isaac, all about current events and the passage of time.
The setlist is a “cultural whiplash,” everything from Cy Coleman to Laura Nero, with a few original songs sprinkled in. It all comes together in a satisfying night that leaves the toughest critics praiseful. The New York Times calls him a “founding father of a genre that fuses performance art, music and stand-up comedy.” And with his sensational six-piece band led by Ben Waltzer, Mizrahi creates a musical sound all his own.
