How we define ‘queer’ at Queerguru has wider and much different significance than other LGBTQ websites. We’ve never pretended to conform to any narrow definitions and so have always celebrated our very own subjective term when editing these pages. After all calling Queerguru ‘the norm’ would the worst insult you could ever throw at us.
It’s always been this way . Back in 2010 when we were at Sundance Film Festival ostensibly helping the Program Director of Miami’s Gay and Lesbian Film Festival search out new movies we could screen, we kind of got sidetracked. Yes, we found some great LGBTQ movies that made our list, but the actual film that really bowled me over and has stuck in my mind to this very day was The Poodle Trainer.
It’s a documentary of a non-English speaking glamorous middle- aged Russian woman Irina Markova whose life and passion is the training of poodles to perform during her show in the circus, with them performing various routines and stunts while in costumes. The fact we learn as much about her than just the performances totally endeared me to her and this oddball of a movie. To me this is the very essence of queer.
