It’s there not so surprising then to see this remarkably tender and emotional story played out in this advertisement for the Norwegian Postal Service,
It stars asweet but somewhat lonely older bachelor who, over the course of several years, falls into a strained romance with Papa Noel (or Julenissen, as the Norwegians call Santa). This Santa is every inch a ‘bear’ so the ad resolves the daddy issues that gay guys have long had for Father Christmas.
Its a day a year relationship that lasts for 4 years and starts when bare hairy chest ‘zaddy’ greets Santa when he comes down his chimney. The next year, zaddy sprays cologne, dresses up all nice, and sleeps on the couch so he can catch Santa sneaking around his stockings. Then, another year, the two men ply each other with bon-bons, tea, and hot toddy before exchanging pinecone ornaments made to look like one another.
Saddened by the fact that he only gets special Santa-time once a year, he writes him a very special note: “All I want for Christmas is you.”
When they eventually kiss, a choir literally starts singing, and all seems right with the world. There’s not a single reference to the possible existence of any Mrs. Claus in this cute twist of a very traditional story.
Its rare to see such a love story especially when it involves two ‘mature’ gentlemen, but kudos to the people of Norway, and for the life of me i cannot imagine anywhere else in the world where they would celebrate Christmas in such a fashion
