Good news for fashion aficionados hot on the heals of the captivating doc on John Gallinao (see https://queerguru.com/high-and-low-john-galliano-the-tale-of-a-talented-and-tortured-genius/ ) comes news of two more movies of celebrity fashion designers .
First is a new TV drama series from HULU is BECOMING KARL LAGERFELD the eccentric looking German designer who, amongst many things was instrumental in revitalizing the Chanel brand, helping it regain its position as one of the top fashion houses in the world. The series is set in 1972, prior to Lagerfeld taking the fashion world by storm but when he was a ready-to-wear designer, unknown to the general public.
Lagerfeld (Daniel Brühl) is 38 and not yet wearing his famous catogan. He is a ready-to-wear designer, unknown to the general public. While he meets and falls in love with the sultry Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin), an ambitious and troubling young dandy, the most mysterious of fashion designers dares to take on his friend (and rival) Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois), a genius of haute couture backed by the redoubtable businessman Pierre Bergé (Alex Lutz).
When the series was previewed at Cannes recently creator Isaure Pisani-Ferry said “It was important to me not just to do this as a biopic,” “A biopic takes the fun facts of life and lays them out one after the other. It addresses the curiosity of the viewer. I didn’t want it to read like a Wikipedia page about this person.”
The series screens on HULU Friday June 7th
Later that month also on HULU will be Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge the Belgian/American fashion designer who is best known for two things . Her wrap dress, and her marriage to Prince Egon von Fürstenberg, a title she has clung on to even though they divorced in 1983, Diana was one of two wives the Prince had, but in between them he had a male partner.
In 2001 Von Furstenberg married the entrepreneur Barry Diller. It was the 59 year old Diller’s first marriage, and while he is often referred to as bisexual, he had lived most of his adult life as a more or less openly gay man.
Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge, from filmmakers. Trish Dalton and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy focuses on her life and work and how she created a name for herself in a field that was predominantly male and amassed a multi-million dollar fashion empire. It will have its World Premiere at Tribeca on June 3rd and 4th and then will screen on Hulu on June 25.
