We always knew that this Lockdown would’t stop the fevered imagination of Justin Elizabeth Sayre. They may not have been holding many Meetings of International Order of Sodomites at Joes Pub in NY recently, but this hilarious funny queer performer/writer who Michael Musto called, “Oscar Wilde meets Whoopi Goldberg” has still been very busy.
Sayre has written HOT FLASH: The Shit-Kicking Adventures of Chicklette and Concetta which they claim is an unauthorized sequel to John Waters’ FEMALE TROUBLE. It’s now in the hands of the Midnight Movie Collective and this 8th new play for the group, brings you the continuing story of Chicklette and Concetta played by Susan Walsh and Cookie Mueller in the Original Film.
Hot Flash picks up after the film Female Trouble, where Dawn Davenport has been sent to the electric chair for murder, but her two best friends Chicklette (Pancake) and Concetta (Droege) are still milling around Baltimore, figuring out what life will be like without her. When Chicklette learns that her parole officer, the evil Merv Skankowski (Hiller) has plans to frame her and send her back to jail, the girls head out on a cross-country adventure to get away from the evil Merv. An allegorical trip through Oz, Chicklette and Concetta meet a drunk dealer out of his mind, Jack Straw (Cristantelo), a stripper without a heart, Tina Woodsman (Garcia), and a bragging lumber salesman, Jerry Lionsdale (Creighton). It’s a grand adventure that brings the girls across the country and to the edge of Disaster.
“John Waters is for me and the entire group, our Filthy North Star!” says Sayre, “We always wanted to pay our respect to the wonder of his work, and we finally are taking the chance. With a lot of reverence and hopefully a lot of Filth, we’re making something special.” DROWSENBERG will feature the comedic genius of Drew Droege (HEATHERS), Sam Pancake (A MILLION LITTLE THINGS), Daniel Franzese (MEAN GIRLS, LOOKING) Jenn Harris (HIGH MAINTENANCE, SILENCE! THE MUSICAL), Jeff Hiller (30 ROCK, UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT), Ryan Garcia (COMMUNITY), Daniele Gaither (MAD TV, BOJACK HORSEMAN), Michael Cyril Creighton (HIGH MAINTENANCE, BOB’S BURGERS), Mitch Silpa (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Angela Cristantelo (911), and Randy Harrison (QUEER AS FOLK).
The play will be broadcast on February 27, 2020, at 8 pm EST/5 pm PST, directed by Tom DeTrinis. The virtual showing will be live-streamed by Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles. Tickets available on the Dynasty Typewriter Website. https://www.dynastytypewriter.com
