Netflix have just released the trailer for their highly anticipated new mini series HOLLYWOOD created by Ryan Murphy and it shows that the man clearly still has his Midas touch when it comes to making such superb television.
Murphy, and the other writers, Ian Brennan, Janet Mock and Reilly Smith have gone back in time to the golden days of Hollywood and have rewritten its history. For starters it’s much queerer than it was ever permitted to be.
The storyline follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in the big time, regardless of the personal cost. Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day.
Based on some true stories like the notorious Scotty Bower pimping young man for sex out his Gas Station, Hollywood examines decades-old power dynamics, and what the entertainment landscape might look like if they had been dismantled.
As usual Murphy has gathered together a star-studded cast to play a whole realm of real and fictional characters : they include Patti Lupone, Jim Parsons, Holland Taylor, Darren Criss, Dylan McDermott, Rob Reiner, Queen Latifah, Mira Sorvino and Jeremy Pope.
This unmissable 7 part series is launched on Netflix on May 1st : get ready to binge watch !
