When we think of Provincetown, the oldest art colony in the US, we automatically conjure up thoughts of the breathtaking scenery and the stunning seascapes that have captured the imagination of so many artists over the years. What are also stunning are the men who flock here in all shapes and sizes and have a mutual love affair with what has become such a queer summer paradise. They have also become the subjects of so much of the art that is created here and that have created such a frisson to the weekly ‘gallery walk’ when tout Provincetown turns out to look at all the latest art and artists
Today Danny Keith is one such artist who will be opening an exhibit of his new work at the Greg Salvatori Gallery. Keith is a figurative painter who focuses primarily on the male figure. By working with the same models over long periods of time, the paintings reveal a strong sense of intimacy and desire between artist and subject. The paintings subtly invite narratives of sociopolitical issues to the forefront of contemporary culture and figurative painting. Formal strategies with paint are employed, juxtaposing dissolve with evolve, construction with destruction, fluid with static, with the male figure as subject/object of desire.
