It was Queerguru’s first time covering The Red Carpet at the Provincetown Film Festival that we first spotted Henny Garfunkel. With her very distinctive black-clad outfit festooned with jewelry and her hair piled high, she was impossible to miss so we thrust our microphone in her face and bombarded her with questions.
Turns out that she is much more used to being behind the camera instead of in front of it, and is, in fact, a celebrated portrait photographer who has specialized in capturing the images of leading indie filmmakers and actors for years. She is a well-known habitue of the best film festivals: Sundance, Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto and of course Provincetown (where several decades ago she ran a clothing store)
This year as well as her trotting down the Red Carpet in Provincetown with her camera. Garfunkel also has an Exhibit of her work on view as part of the celebrations to mark the 20th Edition of the Festival. 20X20: HENNY GARFUNKEL/20 YEARS OF PORTRAITS features one portrait of hers from each of the years and opens at The Schoolhouse Gallery on June 12th. The Prints are priced at $1500, and 50% of this will be donated to the Provincetown Film Festival.
