Happy 94th Birthday Dame Angela Lansbury. You hit Hollywood running up in 1945 by picking up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nomination for your performance in GASLIGHT and have never stopped dazzling us ever since.
You played both Elvis Presley and Laurence Harvey’s mother in movies even though they were both older than you, which put a big smile on our faces. But it was on Broadway where the NY Times called you the First Lady of Musical Theater and the LGBTQ community claimed you as a gay icon when you starred as MAME winning our all our hearts and your first Tony Award.
We loved you being a scary showbusiness mother in Gipsy (3rd Tony) and running the Worst Pie Shop in London (Sweeney Todd 4th Tony Award) ….. the list is seemingly endless.
We know you were a major TV star because of Murder She Wrote but we have to confess that despite all of your numerous successes in such a long amazing career, one of our very favorite Angela Lansbury roles was in a little-known very campy film called Something For Everyone with Michael York which will always feature as one of our favorite movies of all time. Here though is a video of you at the Tony Awards in 1988 performing Bosom Buddies with your Mame co-star Bea Arthur another major gay icon. They don’t make them like you two these days , and certainly not wearing dresses like that
Very Many Happy Returns
