GMCW’s The Holiday Show a gay extravaganza in typical ‘capitol’ style

What seemed like centuries ago our London-based Editor In Chief, still hanging on to the concept of being a proper English gent, somehow ended up as a guest at the famed Miss Morgan Adams Pageant in Washington DC.  All he knew was that as far as local Society was concerned it ranked as high as the (Vice Prez & Mrs) Gore’s Annual Halloween Party.

The Pageant is a DC institution, hosted by the Dupont Social Club, that showcases the outrageous creativity of amateur drag. Each fall, contestants vie for the title of Miss Adams Morgan in a one-of-a-kind spectacle of fun and fabulousness. And while the evening provides over-the-top entertainment, it also celebrates and supports the local LGBTQ+ community. Since 1988,  the Dupont Social Club has donated nearly $400,000 to DC-area LGBTQ+ and HIV/AIDS organizations.

The sheer spectacle of this unique event totally overwhelmed him and probably was one of the reasons to propel him to eventually abandon London and cross the Pond for good.  Whilst he never was tempted to ever think of becoming  Pageant Contestant, he was left with a genuine admiration for the extravagant queer culture in the Capital.

Hence this week he’s heading back to enjoy the legendary annual  Gay  Men’s Chorus of Washington HOLIDAY SHOW at the Lincoln Theatre tonight (Dec 10th). This year’s extravaganza will feature tap dancers, over-the-top costumes, and “sparkly snow” — in fact, as the organization put it in a Facebook post, “more sparkles than ever before, more snow than Snowmageddon, and more fun than Santa’s sleigh.”

Not known for doing anything by halves the GMCW. (think big or go home….) the full 250-person chorus will be joined in performance by GMCW ensembles Potomac Fever and Rock Creek Singers, soloists, and the GenOUT Youth Chorus.

Expect their take on the Rockettes with better legs and more muscles and great drag plus everybody’s favorite North Pole bear is likely to make an appearance, too. The festive program of Christmas standards includes “Sleigh Ride,” “Underneath the Tree,” Twelve Rockin’ Days Of Christmas” God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen,” and “Hard Candy Christmas.”

The Holiday Show is  Friday, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 11,at 3 p.m.
Lincoln Theatre, 1215 U St. NW.
Tickets are $25 to $65.
