Gloria & Emilio Estefan and their Dinners in Drag

Since The Palace one of Miami Beach’s oldest gay drag bars relocated to a more central location on the city’s iconic Ocean Drive, the audiences have become overwhelmingly ‘straight’. The queer performers dressed up in all their finery still give their all, but you are now very much aware that the crowds are laughing at them instead of with them.

Is there still room for drag within our community in South Beach?  Well, Mr. and Mrs. Estefan, two of the more famous locals believe so.  They actually own the Cardozo Hotel on Ocean Drive just a stone’s throw from where the very successful gay farce ‘The Birdcage‘ was filmed some 25 years ago.  They have decided to recreate some of the fabulous queer drag to celebrate the film anniversary with Dinner In Drag

This will be a high-energy night out,  staged in Cardozo’s VIP Room for both hotel guests and others who make reservations to come for the show. The experience will include an over-the-top performance curated by Athena Dion, the star and producer of Miami’s popular R House Drag Brunch.

The entire two-hour show will feature musical performances, dance routines, comedy, plus a drag queen DJ to maintain the magical mood. Guests will enjoy a three-course meal from Cardozo’s new restaurant, Call Me Cuban by YUCA, with mojito pairings mixed, of course, by a bartender in drag!

Gloria and Emilio Estafan have always been very vocal allies of the LGBTQ community, something that was very sorely tested when their own daughter came out as gay.  They suddenly had to come to terms with reality which evidently hit them hard at first.  Let’s hope Emily will have reason to be proud of her parent’s new venture.
