Gaston Lacombe migrated to Ptown from French Canada a few years back to open his own art gallery which very quickly has become one of Queerguru’s go-to places for contemporary queer art.
Over the last few months, one motif has dominated Lacombe’s art – the simple circle. Arcs, hoops, halos, suns and moons, but always a circle. As the artist explained to Queerguru, this is a visual representation of his own quest for stability and certainty. Climate change, volatile politics, the pandemic, and armed conflicts all bring a feeling of instability and precariousness to our times. Nothing can be certain. But no matter what happens, a circle will always be a circle. That is one thing we can rely on. The sun and the moon will always rise and continue their eternal arc across our skies. According to Lacombe, circular shapes are grounding, and conducive to introspection. Circles contain, and protect, while at the same time radiating their energy
