Premiering at the BFI London Film Festival this week is one of the most wonderful quintessential British romantic comedies with a creme-de-la-creme cast that shows queer UK cinema at its very best. Frank and Percy is a British comedy-drama adapted from the critically acclaimed West End play of the same name. Its cast is an inevitable who’s who of British acting royal starring six-time Olivier Award-winner and Academy Award-nominee Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings, X-Men) and three-time Olivier Award-winner Roger Allam (The Thick of It, Les Misérables), who reprise their stage roles. McKellen is one of three openly gay knights of the realm in the cast…..that also include Sir Derek Jacobi, and Sir Stephen Fry plus there are also three Dames : Joanna Lumley, Sian Phillips and Sheila Hancock.
The story follows two older men who meet while walking their dogs on Hampstead Heath. What begins as casual conversation about the weather and aching hips gradually deepens into an unexpected friendship – and perhaps something more. Wryly funny and poignantly tender, Frank and Percy is a heartfelt, life-affirming tale about the courage to take a chance on love at any age.
he film is adapted by award-winning screenwriter Martin Sherman (Mrs. Henderson Presents, Bent) from the West End hit play by Ben Weatherill, and directed by internationally acclaimed film and theatre director Sean Mathias (Bent, Waiting for Godot, Hamlet)….. the latter once being McKellan’s life partner. After its premiere at the BFI London Film Festival the film will habvev its theatrical release in UK Cinemas ( and we are guessing world wide too)
| Sean Mathias is still inexplicable linked professionally with his ex partner Sir Ian and we got to sit down and talk wth him when they were about to do a play together in London back in 2019: here’s our interview |
