First previews of two musical candidates for Academy Awards in 2026

In queer circles it used to be that one of the make or break reasons for not pursuing a potential boyfrend was if he was into  ‘showtunes’ ! I tried to check out if that was still a definite no-no, but the responses were mixed .  Now that pop singers have invaded the terriority there is whole generation of millennial gay men who are becoming somewhat fans of the genre.  They are the ones who are waiting anxiously for the release this fall of a new version of THE KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN as it stars Jennifer Lopez.   Actually we are just as excited by the fact that that her co-star is Deigo Luna who has been on our radar since his stunning debut in 2001 in  ‘Y tu mamá también’ in 2001 with Gael García Bernal.  Even more important is the fact that its directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon responsible for two of the best film musicals ever…..Dreamgirls and Chicago.

Also due in movie theaters this fall is “Wicked:For Good,” the second part to 2024’s hit Broadway movie adaptation reunitung  Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda who were both nominated for Academy Awards. The returning cast will also include Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp and Bowen Yang as Pfannee. Jon M. Chu directed both films with screenplays by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.

Last year’s “Wicked” was a massive hit and grossed $756 million at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation ever and Universal’s third biggest movie of all time. It received 10 Academy Award nominations, including best picture

Cynthia Erivo has revealed she has co-written one of the songs for the new movie : giving her the possibility of two Oscar wins this time
