Just half way through 2024 its proving a great year for documentaties of female icons….. and would be icons. There is ‘Let The Canary Sing‘ where we fell in love with Cyndi Lauper all over again: ‘I Am: Celine Dion‘: very emotional portrait of the Canadian singer: ‘I-800-ON-HER-OWN‘ on Grammy Award winner lesbian favorite singer Ani DiFranco: ‘Woman In Charge‘ a puff piece on the annoying Diane Von Furstenberg who loves to marry gay men.
Now there is a new one that may surpass them all FAYE …. the story of the Academy Award winning actress Faye Dunaway who is equally famous for being difficult and/or eccentric. Either way her story, filmed by Laurent Bouzereau, who captures her tumultuous history and controversial reputation in this compelling portrait that just previewed at Cannes Film Festival.
Miss Dunaway has always enjoyed an enormous queer following throughout her amazing fim career with the highlight (for gays) being playing Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest. And we rushed to her side when she almost presented the Acadamy Award for Best Film to the WRONG FILM in 2017!
She gets real credit from us for opening up in FAYE and talking about her bipolar disorder diagnosis and history of alcoholism . It helps turn this in to the most compelling of films, especially as she is honest enough as speaks so candidly about some of her questionable choices in life
.“Faye” premieres July 13 on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Its TOTALLY UNMISSABLE
