Fashion Icons on Film 2017/8

One of the most highly anticipated documentaries to premiere at Sundance next month is a new profile on Dame Vivienne Westwood  called Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist.  Directed by newbie filmmaker Lorna Tucker , the film will chart the avantgarde designer’s (once known as the Queen of Punk) creative inspiration, alongside her activism and heritage through interviews with those closest to her – including her son, Joseph Corré. The documentary also covers Vivienne Westwood’s personal life including her relationship with Malcolm McLaren, erstwhile manager of the Sex Pistols and the designer’s partner until 1983.

The documentary being released by Dogwoof will be in UK cinemas on March 18th 2018, and they have yet to announce when the rest of the world will get to see it.  Watch this space.

‘The Gospel According to Andre’ is  a new documentary on the larger-than-life former American editor-at-large for Vogue magazine André Leon Talley.  The ubiquitous  Talley is a master of self-promotion and loves nothing more than talking about his favorite subject i.e. himself, and he is such a polarizing figure in the fashion industry that this is one film that many are going to love to hate.

The documentary is being released by Magnolia Pictures sometime in Spring 2018.

A very recent release is DRIES a profile on the Belgian designer Dries Van Noten who despite his enormous success has somehow managed to keep his label completely independent, which in itself is very rare these days.  Van Noten allowed a very experienced documentarian Reiner Holzemer and his cameras to follow him at work and at hime for one whole year.   It is a fascinating glimpse into the world of a fashion icon who is very respected universally in the industry as a designer’s designer.

Dries was released by Dogwoof and is available via Amazon, ITunes and other major streaming platforms.

Michael Roberts the Fashion & Style Director of Vanity Fair made his filmmaking debut with this documentary on the legendary shoe designer Manolo Blahnik.  Roberts lined up an impressive list of fashion heavyweights and celebrities to testify that the 74 year old Blahnik, an charming eccentric figure obsessed with re-incarnating Cecil Beaton, is a genius.

This compelling and affectionate profile has just been released by Music Box Films on many major global streaming platforms, including Itunes & Amazon.

In Louboutin’s Shoes is a made-for-tv documentary on the ‘other’ most famous shoe designer in the world. Filmmaker MICHAEL WALDMAN and his crew trailed the rather glamourus CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN for a whole year to make this flattering documentary on the man behind the world’s most expensive and highly sought-after shoes.  Now available on Netflix.

The Belgian designer Martin Margiela worked for Jean Paul Gaultier before he started his own label Maison Margiela in 1989 with partner Jenny Meirens. This is their story  which offers an unprecedented insight into the genesis and unravelling of what became one of the most influential fashion houses of our time.  When the founders had financial problems,  they sold up and never spoke to each other again.  After struggling to replace Margiela himself, in 2014 John Galliano finally stepped into the spot.

There are plans to screen the movie on Dutch TV  in January 2018, but a date for a global VOD is still to be announced.  More details from http://wemargiela.com/#home

After being announced in October 2016 with much fanfare the planned biopic on McQueen directed by Andrew Haig and starring Jack O’Connell then just quietly disappeared from view never to be seen again.  However what is still on schedule to be released some time in the Fall of 2018 is a documentary on the talented and troubled genius to be directed by Ian Bonhote, who has done films for Matthew Williamson and Hussein Chalayan.  To be released by  https://www.bleeckerstreetmedia.com/

Although Zac Posen hardly rates as a ‘fashion icon’ Vogue Magazine released this documentary this year of the American designer that most people know because he is a Judge on the Project Runway TV Show .  Posen has dressed various celebrity clients at one time or another and has some notable commercial tie-ups with the likes of the Sean John, and more recently Brook Brothers, where he now serves as Creative Director.

This is only available to stream via   http://houseofz.vogue.com/
