(En route to Sydney World Pride ) we visit ALEXANDER McQUEEN; MIND, MYTHOS , MUSE @ National Gallery in Melbourne

We asked Queerguru’e newest Contributor Steven Bitkower  (one-half of the notorious Bitkower twins) to make a slight detour when he left Florida to go to WorldPride in Sydney last week. So he stopped off at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne to check out their wonderful new exhibit Alexander McQueen: Mind, Mythos, Muse. It’s been some 13 years since McQueen, then  40 years old, took his own life but the influence of this multi-award-winning genius is felt even stronger than ever

McQueen once said: “If you want to know me, just look at my work‘” that’s exactly what we asked Steven Bitkower to do for us.

The NGV already has its own collection of McQueen garments that it had very shrewdly been buying up since 1965.  Its collection also includes pieces from McQueen’s tenure at the French house Givenchy, where he worked between 1996 and 2001. Even after his death in 2010, the gallery has continued to acquire McQueen designs, with the fashion house currently headed by the creative director Sarah Burton.

The Exhibit also includes sixty garments and accessories on loan from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Lacma).  McQueen was known for his intensely dramatic runway shows,  and for his designs that incorporated natural history, mythology, sex, death and violence. So the exhibit  juxtaposes his designs with more than 70 historical artworks from the artistic movements that inspired him

P.S. Editors Note : This may not be an “official event’ of WORLD PRIDE but we think the timing to honor the work/life of this incredible queer genius is just perfect
