When Elska Magazine’s Editor Liam Campbell first announced that Belfast in Northern Ireland would be the next choice to be featured in the magazine, he was inundated with messages on social media from people saying they hoped the issue would be ‘full of gingers’. He admitted to getting annoyed because of the fetishization of a particular hair color, and also because it simply isn’t true that the island of Ireland is all gingers. Well, not quite
As someone whose late husband came from Ulster (the real name for Northern Ireland) I would have advised Liam to relax.. My brunette husband and I used to laugh about the myth about how this was meant to be the land of redheads, but then again we did so love catching sight of a Damien Lewis, Eddie Redamayne or Domhnall Gleason lookalike.
Always poorly compared to Ireland’s southern capital Dublin, Belfast is a wonderfully welcoming city and its bourgeoning gay scene is really taking off at long last perhaps in part due to the adoption of same-sex marriage With finally having a settled political future, the men (of every color hair) are more welcoming than ever . Unpretentious, friendly and handsome …… Belfast should be on travel schedules for every adventurous gay man
