Elizabeth Waterman: GORGEOUS DRAG: a stunning online exhibit

Between 2014 and 2016 photographer Elisabeth Waterman undertook an ambitious project covering the drag scenes in New York.  The result is Gorgeous Drag which is now an online Exhibition at the Albumen Gallery.

It is one of the very BEST collections of drag
queens and performers that we have ever seen.

It was the perfect dynamic and significant time with an increasingly assertive drag scene.  It was just coming out of the shadow of its earlier underground existence, and now confident  of its contribution towards an expanding conversation about gender and sex in the US

One of the remarkable things about this project is that prior to Gorgeous Drag, Waterman had only photographed portraits in the regulated space of her studio. The whole project was quite a risk for her as she set out to explore New York’s underground performance world, shadowy and slightly unhinged, where the players flutter like moths to the spectacle of the spotlight.  She described it ‘like a mob of bit-part players and high-performance personalities, people playing out and cutting loose.”   And she captured it all on a disposable point-and-shoot camera!
