DYKE DRAG BRUNCH : for dykes by dykes

Provincetown’s Annual Women’s Week has many of the same events and performers every Fall, but there is one event this year in particular that got the whole Queerguru team excited.

The new owners at the Crown and Anchor are hosting Brooklyn’s Dyke Drag Show the baby  of co-producers Kayla Manjarrez, a fashion stylist, and I’m Baby, a nonbinary drag performer.  Since it debuted in early February 2022 with a Valentine’s Day-themed show at Ginger’s Bar in Park Slope, Brooklyn every single show has been sold out

Playing in Brooklyn’s last lesbian bar it is a drag and variety show by dykes, for dykes. It’s a simple concept, but any drag enthusiast knows just how rare it is to see a lineup of all non-cisgender male performers.

They spoke to LOGO about their new venture and I’m Baby said  When I first started drag, I thought it was so interesting that there’s no drag in lesbian spaces really. So I had the idea; I just didn’t really know how to facilitate it. And then a few months ago, Kayla said, “Hey, what if we tried to put on a Dyke Drag show?” And I said, “You know what? This is something that I’ve cared about and wanted to do. I’m ready and willing to figure this out how we can make it happen.”

Manajareeze added : We’ve been trying to get it off the ground for a minute now. We were actually planning to start it in December, and then Omicron hit. So it’s been a work in progress, and we’re so excited that we were finally able to get it off the ground. And I think [the timing] was meant to be. I think Valentine’s day was a perfect way to start.

Their appearance during PTowns’ Women’s week is particularly special as it’s a celebration and homage to Provincetown’s Dyke Drag Brunch that ran from 1994-2000.   It will be by and for dykes which is a rarity in itself, and they are encouraging all attendees to come dressed in drag…. just like in the 1990s
