Discovering the ‘gay secrets’ of Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts

One is hesitant to use the phase ‘back in the dark ages’ as somedays if feels that for the LGBTQ community we could politically be on the very edge of their revival now.  But way back when Boston was ‘growing up’ and the Puritans were in charge, the city was one of the most conservative and uptight in our young nation and hence the expression ‘banned in Boston’.

Yet despite the efforts of our forefathers somehow over the years a surprising amount of LGBT-themed art made its way into the Boston’s Museum of Fine Art.  It has this whole hidden gay side that many of us are totally unaware off.  From its rich collections of ancient Greek homoerotica to lesbian scenes in classical Chinese painting to a genderqueer figure in a famous post-Impressionist canvasm, the MFA has it all.

Now monthly the people behind Oscar Wilde Tours offer a 2 hour fun and informative to help people uncover the Museum’s impressive cache of queer art.  There’s the male/male couple that were ancient Athens’ Uncle Sam; the god Priapus and what he did with his huge appendage;  the sexiest Jesus of the Italian Renaissance; 19th century women artists and their ‘Boston marriages’; painter John Singer Sargent’s secret obsession; and an intersex figure we bet you’ve never noticed in a famous impressionist canvas!

P.S. Queerguru would love you to bits if you did us one tiny favor.  Despite the fact that we have had almost 270K hits on YouTube (yeah!) they will not give us a single cent of the advertising money that they make off us until we have more subscribers.  Won’t cost you a dime,  but it will help support our site. Just simply click on the link below.  Thank you very much!
