Even though Queerguru can consider itself quite knowledgeable when it comes to the terminology used within the LGBTQA+ community, every day we are reminded that we do not know everything. Like today, when there is an email idling in our inbox that talks about Dark BL.
It appears that Dark BL refers to Boys’ Love stories that combine romantic relationships with genres such as crime, legal thrillers, psychological drama, political history and suspense, moving beyond traditional school romance settings. Rather than focusing solely on first love, Dark BL explores mature themes including justice, corruption, trauma, survival, and moral conflict. It has become one of the fastest-growing storytelling trends across the Asian BL market.
Now global LGBTQ+ streaming platform GagaOOLala presents a new slate of Dark BL original series, including The Prosecutor’s Proposal, Deep In, Unfold, Blue Lips and When Light Fades, showcasing the next evolution of BL storytelling. According to GagaOOLala, viewers are increasingly seeking BL stories that combine romance with crime, politics, psychological conflict and historical themes. Rather than serving as the entire story, romance has become part of larger narratives driven by justice, corruption, survival and human complexity.
Responding to this evolution, GagaOOLala is launching a collection of genre-driven BL original series that span legal thrillers, psychological drama, crime mysteries and historical epics.
I should explain that I am learning all this literally as I write. Evidently today’s BL increasingly asks what love looks like under impossible circumstances, instead of asking whether two characters will fall in love.
The Prosecutor’s Proposal is a Korean Legal Thriller that claims it redefines B, and is a romance that unfolds inside Korea’s prosecution system amid murder investigations, legal battles and institutional corruption. Directed by Yang Kyung-hee, The Prosecutor’s Proposal follows prosecutor Joo Tae-seon and investigator Lee Chae-ha, whose lives have been intertwined since a murder destroyed both families fifteen years earlier. As they investigate corruption involving prosecutors and powerful conglomerates, the two men gradually become each other’s greatest weakness—and ultimately, each other’s only hope for redemption. Ironically, one of the biggest talking points wasn’t the murder mystery itself.

Blue Lips is a Noir BL About Murder, Medical Injustice and Second Chances. Former elite lawyer Teng Mo walks away from a promising career after becoming haunted by an unsolved murder case. Retreating from society, he opens an adult shop and drifts through an aimless life until rebellious bar singer Wu Shi Xian, known for his striking blue lipstick, repeatedly visits to buy Viagra. The truth, however, is far different from what Teng Mo imagines. The medication is for Wu Shi Xian’s older sister, who suffers from pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare disease that causes patients’ lips to turn blue because of oxygen deprivation.
Set across an adult shop, underground bars and hospitals, Blue Lips combines crime, medical injustice and emotional healing through a dark neon visual style rarely seen in Asian BL. Rather than wealthy protagonists, the series follows two social outsiders struggling with guilt, survival and hope, offering a grounded and emotionally mature take on queer drama. Adapted from Xia Zi Xu’s million-hit novel and produced by an award-winning creative team, Blue Lips demonstrates how BL can successfully blend social realism with compelling emotional storytelling.
