If any good things came out of the nightmarish AIDS pandemic, it was the appearance of iconic figures such as Dennis Peron, whose actions not only helped improve the lives of thousands, but showed how much he really cared for a community that was suffering so very much. Peron was San Francisco’s biggest pot dealer back in those days when cannabis was still very illegal. However, when the AIDS epidemic swept through SF’s queer community, he realized that marijuana was more than a good time—it’s medicine.
In 1991, Peron organized for the passage of San Francisco’s Proposition P, a resolution calling on the state government to permit medical cannabis, which received 79% of the vote. That same year, in the wake of his lovers death, he co-founded the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club, a five-story dispensary (the first public cannabis dispensary) complete with rainbow murals, drag shows, and doctors on-site.
His businesses were raided by authorities in 1978 and 1990, and also in 1996 a month before the election, and on this occasion, he was arrested
In 1996, Peron coauthored California Proposition 215 with activists Scott Imler and Valerie Corral which sought to allow the use of medical cannabis Peron worked with other activists such as.[14] Proposition 215 was passed soon thereafter, which allowed the club to reopen.
