De Santis Strikes Again: THE KINGS SINGERS are banned in Florida because 2 of the 6 members are GAY

The King’s Singers are a highly successful British cappella vocal ensemble established in 1968. They are named after the celebrated King’s College in Cambridge, England (founded in 1441)  where the group was formed by six choral scholars.

Today the ensemble travels worldwide for its performances, appearing in around 125 concerts each year, mostly in Europe, the US and East Asia, having recently added the People’s Republic of China to their list of touring territories. In recent years the group has had several UK appearances at the Royal Albert Hall Proms and concerts as part of the Three Choirs Festival and the City of London Festival. The King’s Singers consist of two countertenors, a tenor, a bass and two baritones.  Plus two of the six members are gay  …… and that’s why the dirty work of De Santis came into play this week.

Pensacola Christian College in Florida, the final stop on the group’s four-city tour of the United States,  informed the ensemble two hours before the concert was to begin on Saturday that it was being canceled because of concerns about what it called the lifestyle of a singer, who is gay. Students, parents, and staff members had complained to the administration, saying that hosting the group would run counter to the college’s Baptist values.

Jonathan Hawkin a member of the Group said it was the first time in the group’s 55-year history that an engagement had been canceled for reasons other than bad weather, war or the coronavirus pandemic. He also said the group had performed at Pensacola before. (obviously in pre-De Santis days )

The school’s decision has drawn backlash, with artists, gay rights activists, and the ensemble’s fans denouncing the college for homophobia and discrimination. The King’s Singers issued a statement on Monday expressing hope that “any conversations that follow might encourage a greater sense of love, acceptance and inclusion.”

In an interview on Tuesday, Jonathan Howard, a member of the six-person group, called the cancellation “really shocking” and “hurtful.” The singers led a workshop for Pensacola students on Saturday and had started rehearsing for the concert — a crowd of more than 5,000 was expected — when they were pulled aside by college officials and informed of the cancellation, he said.

This type of bigoted behaviour in the 21st century is quite astonishing. How on earth did this so-called “Christian”College become accredited and in the USA. This country once at the forefront of modernity and the exciting possibilities awaiting in the future has relapsed quite badly and seems to be regressing to mediaeval belief and behaviour. Sad!
