Stella is a no-nonsense potty-mouth old fashioned lesbian elderly lesbian. Her partner of some 31 years is sweet frumper near-blind Dot and this mis-matched couple have a happy life together in a remote part of Maine. This is however threatened one day by Dot’s interfering granddaughter Molly who tricks her into signing her liberty and whisks away to be locked up in a Care Home for Seniors.
Stella stages a midnight rescue, but fearing that Molly may be in pursuit, the couple of old lovers head for the Border. The Canadian one that is, as there the women can actually marry and thus be responsible for each other legally from now on. On the road they pick up Patrick a scantily clad hunky male stripper with a heart of gold which adds an interesting odd second strand to this road movie. It also later provides the most in your face gratuitous male full frontal nudity I think I have ever seen in a lesbian movie.
It’s a touching over-sentimentalised syrupy story albeit with some very crude language coming out of Stella’s loose mouth but the humor seemed a little forced at time. It was great to see a story about for once which was about a gay couple in the twilight of their lives. The fact that they were played with such joie de vivre by two superb Oscar winning actresses Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Flicker made the patchy script work much better than it probably deserved.
