‘Claiming Space’ a series of self-portraits by queer trans pop artist JJ QUINN

Queerguru first met JJ Quinn at the Art Gaysel Show at Hotel Gaythering, Miami Beach last Fall. He is a trans queer pop artist  who lives and works in Manhattan, NY. A midwestern transplant, he made the move to the city for all the reasons so many others do – to be immersed in the energy and opportunity only a place like NYC can offer. His deep appreciation for New York’s 80’s queer culture and thriving street art scene is also a driving influence and is instantly recognizable in his work.

Now he is about to have his first Provincetown solo show at Studio Lacombe in Whaler Wharf.  Titled CLAIMING SPACE : THE ART OF JJ QUINN in which he takes us on a personal journey of self-acceptance, playful defiance, and sexual liberation as he claims space as a gay trans man in the cis-male dominated bars, clubs and parties.

Through this series of self-portraits, we see him challenge the weight of feeling othered and embracing these spaces, and men, with a sense of joyful exhibitionism.  JJ’s work is a celebration of his own masculinity and urge to be seen in spaces where he long-felt he did not belong.

Quinn told Queergurur “I walk into these spaces knowing I will likely be one of the only trans people in the room. Existing and knowing that you’re different is intimidating. And on a broader scale, knowing that I live in a country that wishes we were all invisible. But I have as much right to be here as anyone else. And so I show up, and I will keep showing up. “

August 4th -10th
Studio Lacombe is located at 237 Commercial St, in Whalers Wharf, Provincetown, MA.
