One of the few film genres that Queerguru does not cover is ‘disaster movies’. Until now that is. Amazon Prime has just released a very lengthy trailer of the new take on Cinderella, and from where we are sitting this is no fairy tale and we think is destined to sink faster than the Titanic (not the film version!)
The sophomore feature is from writer/director Kay Cannon who never seems to grasp the point that when ‘camp’ is not funny at all, it just lands totally flat. Even an A-list cast will not be able to save this wretched take on the unlikely story of the step-daughter/kitchen maid who marries the Prince. It’s great that the new ‘Cinderella‘ is a Latina woman, and she’s wanting to start her own business, but even that is not enough to save the day.
True the cast includes Billy Porter playing …… Billy Porter as usual, but also the hapless James Corden. He may be a Tony Award-Winning Actor but in all the musicals he appears in, he is like a kiss of death ….. we shall never forgive him for his gross and offensive caricature of a gay man in The Prom.
