Christopher Sousa is one of those rare queer Provincetown artists not obsessed with landscapes, seascapes, and the ubiquitous flower-decked Cape Cod Cottages that fill the bulk of the galleries here in town. He is inspired by another type of local beauty i.e. the men. Sousa is drawn to the long languid type that manages somehow to look both silently erotic whilst at the same time, grossly underfed.
He told Queerguru that his inspiration comes from people he meets and interacts with and an ongoing desire to investigate and document the complexities of their physical distinctiveness. Sousa is a PTown resident who adores the solitude of the winter once the summer tourists have long since gone. That is nowhere more evident than in his curious figures and portraits that explore themes of isolation and alienation.
Whilst the COVD lockdown may have restricted his choice of models somewhat this year, it has in no way dulled his body of new work that will be in his Show at the William Scott Gallery from July 23d He gave us a sneak preview of some of the pieces and you can get more details of them from the Gallery.
