It’s always been one of Queerguru’s main missions to support and promote queer culture that has been created within our community. It’s always been important to us that collectively we are responsible for telling our own history and also being the ones making the blueprints for our future.
Canadian actor, writer, activist, and producer, Charlie David, is a major force in making this happen, and there is a good chance that any queer culture created in Canada is the handiwork of his production company, Border 2 Border. Think Dante’s Cove, Shadowlands, Judas Kiss, Drag Heals, Positive Youth I’m A Stripper etc : it makes for a very impressive resume which has earned him some 73 prestigious awards
In recent years, David’s focus has been on love. Queer love. There is SETTLE DOWN a new TV series that has just been released but has already won 5 awards. It’s the story of Mason (played by Alexander Nunez), a celebrated matchmaker and host of a wildly popular advice podcast that offers listeners answers to their questions on all things love. Mason’s matchmaking business is thriving—he helps clients from all walks of life find their perfect match with unmatched success. But while his professional life is soaring, his marriage to his husband Jarod (Leighton Alexander Williams) is on the brink of collapse.
If there is an ounce of romance in your queer soul (!) you will end up binge-watching all 6 episodes just to see if love really does win out. Alexander, who you may remember from Avocado Toast The Series or Moonshine, is the real star of the piece that he also wrote
Now David has turned his hand to Gay Dating. Although technically it’s queer dating as his reality show as the ‘contestants’ looking for love include queer women and some trans folk….. and special kudos to David for including someone with HIV+. In Dating Unlocked, hopeful romantics select someone they’d like to continue the romance with – by choosing between three prospective dates. To assist these love seekers in creating a connection, each episode involves games, activities and intimate moments tailored to showcase their personalities and interests. After weighing their options, the lead dater extends a secret invite for a second date. Will the chosen person unlock those fuzzy, flirty feelings and show up, or leave them alone behind the door?
It’s a fresh casual approach for those looking for love: IF we have any complaint (!) is that we get so involved in the decision-making, but David never lets us see a follow-up to know if they have found love for their lifetime. Or just for the night.
