Can Blithe Spirit really be as bad as the UK critics insist?

Poor Noel Coward would be turning over in his grave if he could read all the reviews of the latest movie adaption of his classic play (and real gay favorite) Blithe Spirit.  It had all the possibilities (on paper) of being a big hit especially as it starred Academy Award Winner Dame Judi Dench plus Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens.  But something went so badly wrong that it got such a savaging from the Critics when it was released by Sky Cinema in the UK, that it only registered a very measly 33 on Rotten Tomatoes.

The reason we are even writing about it now is that we want to believe that they were all wrong (except for the Jewish Chronicle who praised it with “It’s intermittently amusing but never hilarious”) . Now this Brit period drama is scheduled to be released in the US by IFC Films , on Feb 19th, so we are anxiously awaiting to see it for ourselves.

I mean, its Dame Judi after all , how bad can it really be?  (that’s a rhetorical question)

PS If you are not happy with this you can still stream David Lean’s Academy Award Winning adaptation in 1946 starring the indefatigable Dame Margaret Rutherford, another real national treasure
