There are not many cities in the world that can date their LGBTQ community’s history back to the 19th Century  but Brighton a sunny resort town on the UK’s south coast is one that can. Many men were initially drawn to Brighton by the enormous numbers of soldiers garrisoned in the town during the Napoleonic Wars.

Then during the Second World War, Brighton was filled with women and men in the armed forces who were away from home meeting other lesbians and gay people for the first time in their lives.  When the War was over, many of them never wanted to go back to their closeted family homes.

Now the gentrified city, which the locals like to call ‘London By The Sea’, boasts one of the largest LGBTQ populations in the country.   In fact in recent surveys the city found that it had the highest percentage of same-sex households in the UK.

The annual Brighton Gay Pride now claims to the biggest Pride Event in the country attracting some 180,000 visitors,  many of whom travel a considerable distance to attend, and they all literally overtake the town. Here’s a ‘before and after’ photo of one of Brighton’s most popular gay pub :

In quite a coupe for Pride Organisers. Britney Spears  agreed to headline the Event this year.  The singer who hasn’t appeared on the stage in the  UK since 2011 wowed the crowds with her performance, which is more than we can say about her new ‘gender-free’ perfume Prerogative that she just launched.
