BRAVO Volleyball Ireland’s first LGBTQ+ inclusive team : winners through and through

Just as Queerguru’s Editor-In-Chief’s visit to Ireland is coming to an end, we discovered in Dublin the country’s first LGBTQ+ inclusive Volleyball team. Bravo is part of DVC (Dublin Volleyball Club)and the team and its associated initiatives not only represent the sporting ambitions of the LGBTQ+ community in Dublin but also shed light on the broader themes of acceptance, inclusivity, and empowerment.

Bravo has objectives to support the development of the sport of volleyball in the local communities and in Ireland. A major focal point of their strategy is to promote an inclusive and welcoming space in addition to promoting fundamental attributes of a healthy lifestyle.

To appreciate the significance of BRAVO Volleyball, it is crucial to understand Ireland’s socio-cultural evolution. For much of its history, Ireland was a predominantly conservative nation. The Catholic Church had a dominant influence on public opinion and policy-making. It wasn’t until the close of the 20th century and the dawn of the 21st that Ireland began to witness a marked shift in its societal perspectives.

The monumental 2015 referendum saw Ireland become the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote. This not only represented a legal shift but also a cultural and societal revolution. The majority’s endorsement indicated a changing Ireland, one that embraced diversity and inclusivity more than ever before.

Bravo Volleyball lies in its ability to bridge the gap between sports and societal activism. They didn’t just play games; they challenged stereotypes, fought against discrimination, and stood as beacons of empowerment for countless LGBTQ+ individuals who, for so long, had felt marginalized and unseen in traditional sports settings.

It also serves as an essential networking space. Beyond the volleyball court, members find solace in shared experiences and stories. For many, it is a sanctuary, a place where they can be themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination. This essence of community, where mutual support and understanding take precedence, is a cornerstone of the team’s ethos.

BRAVO Volleyball is a testament to the incredible resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland. It is more than just a sports team; it is a movement, a beacon of hope, and a symbol of the changing socio-cultural landscape of the nation. In the rhythmic bounce of the volleyball, the swift movements on the court, and the triumphant cheers of players and supporters alike, one can witness a narrative of change, acceptance, and unyielding spirit.
