Boys Dance is a delightful children’s book written by John Robert Allman and illustrated by Luciano Lozano. The book, in collaboration with The American Ballet Theatre, explores the world of dance from a boys perspective, in a positive and affirming way. Chock full of information on technique and correct dance terminology, with a bit of history thrown in for good measure, all wrapped up in an easily digestible way for young children to learn and appreciate the art of dance. Lozano’s illustrations create a dance-like energy that is palpable with smiling boys darting across each page. On these pages the boys, from multicultural backgrounds, are the stars.
An afterword with photos and interviews with some of ABT’s leading male dancers such as James B. Whiteside who wishes to discuss the importance of celebrating and normalizing ballet and dance for male children because of his own experiences. It completes this empowering and joyful picture book celebrating boys who love to dance!
Boys Ballet is a themed book that is long overdue. Bravo to all involved in creating this piece of children’s literature that should be read to boys and girls alike.
