The best thing about the critically drummed mish-mash of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody was the award-winning performance of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury. The micro-managing of the project by the remaining members of Queen who ensured that they were shown in a good light, meant that the Freddie we saw on screen was not the one from real life that we so loved.
Hopefully the next highly anticipated biopic of an iconic gay rock star will be a great deal better. Rocketman is the story of (Sir) Elton John and the film follows his early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music up to his eventual musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.
Written by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) , the movie is directed by Dexter Fletcher who did the last two weeks finishing Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer was fired (but we don’t hold that against Fletcher). The movie reunites Fletcher with actor Taron Egerton who, wearing ridiculous glasses, starred in Eddie The Eagle, now he dons even more outrageous eyewear to play Elton.
The first preview trailer is very impressive as it shows that Egerton really can sing , and that alone makes us want to see the finished movie that is due to be released this summer. Plus tt also stars Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
We are promised that the film is ‘based on a true fantasy’ just like Elton himself. We cannot wait.
