Netflix has just launched the trailer of the latest TV project from Ryan Murphy the producer with the midas touch. It stars out-gay actor Ben Platt who picked up a Tony Award for his performance in Dear Evan Hansen. He plays Payton Hobart a highly ambitious wealthy college kid who one day wants to become the President of US, but first he has to win the job of student body president and then secure admission into Harvard
Hobart is determined to win at all costs and doesn’t care how dirty he has to play , and in the first episode he warns warns his classmates not to get in the way of his presidential aspirations, as he faces off with his fellow high school candidates and explodes on his running mate (played by Zoey Deutch) after discovering a video of her using a gay slur.
It’s a political satire that takes aim at the sheer idiocracy of the present administration and although they may not be referred to by name Hobart has the morals as he abuses the privilege of being born wealthy with that of Ivanka Trump and Jared. Despite the very witty writing there is a very dark side to the stories in each subsequent episode as he faces yet another election to force his way to very top.
Hobart’s mother is played by Academy Award Winner Gwyneth Paltrow , and the A list cast also includes Bette Midler, Bob Balaban, Dylan McDermott, January Jones and Lucy Boynton. However the real scene stealer in this trailer is Two Time Academy Award winner Jessica Lange who plays Hobert’s running mate’s feisty old grandmother who gave us the title line for this piece. Worth watching for her alone.
Starts on NETLIX on 27th September 2019
