One of the most despicable things one sees all too often on ‘dating sites’ is people who insist on writing ‘No Fats, Femmes or Asians’. We all respect that everybody has different tastes and preferences in men, but defining it in such a hateful and derogative manner like this perpetuates the ill-conceived myth that if any part of this description applies to you, then you are not a real man. Or one that others could possibly be attracted to on any level.
Now there is new short film in the offing that takes on part of this as it will explore the nature of femme identity among gay men, and the way men who have sex with men are expected to adhere to masculine stereotypes.
Actor Corey Camperchioli, who identifies as femme is the creator and star of “Femme: The Film,” a fictional story about a gay man navigating New York’s gay community and the challenges of love, friendship and dating in the Big Apple. He has recruited Alden Peters of the award winning Coming Out to direct, and so they are currently raising through Kickstarter to make the movie a reality.
A very enthusiastic Camperchioli told The Huffington Post “I hope ‘Femme’ will encourage others to love themselves as is. It’s something that I’m still learning how to do, and I hope my journey toward self-love will set others on the track to loving themselves, too. Especially those femme boys out there ― those who get told to ‘deepen their voice,’ ‘tone it down,’ or ‘butch it up.’ I want to tell them what I wish someone had told me a long time ago: you are perfect exactly as you are. So to all the femme boys out there ― this one’s for you!”
