ART GAYSEL : the only group show in the US dedicated to QUEER ART/ARTISTS is celebrating PRIDE in PROVINCETOWN

Provincetown, the speck at the tip of  Cape Cod, is where the Queerguru Team is so happy to call home in the summer months.  This joyous wee place is (amongst other things) the oldest living Art

Colony in the US.  And now, thanks to a handful of pioneers, gallery owners, and an influx of new young artists, it also has one of the most exciting groups of queer artists, too.

A few years ago, Alex Guerra, a Miami/Cuban queer hotelier, washed up on our shores and, like all of us before him, instantly fell in love.  With the town that is, he already has a happy, handsome Him-Indoors. Guerra has an infectious passion and energy for many things (!),  including art, and before he could unpack his new house here, he had already decided that he would move his burgeoning Art Gaysel to the town too.

He started this project back in  2014 at his Hotel Gaythering in Miami Beach after the juggernaut ART BASEL opened in Town and flooded the art market, making it ridiculously tough for anyone not in the overpriced mainstream to even get noticed. Guerra, an avid Instagram follower, decided to invite some of his favorite queer artists from around the globe, and he threw the Hotel doors open for them to start Art Gaysel.  And as they say in the movies, the rest is history

Guerra is essentially a promoter and organizer, and he was determined to give these artists such a perfect opportunity to meet potential buyers, without making a single dollar in profit from any of them.  He is one of the best examples of a queer benefactor whom we know, and one who is so determined to make a real difference in our community by giving this group of people a leg up because he believes in them and in their work,  and not because he could make a quick buck from them

This year, he is back, taking over 18 rooms at the (newly refurbished) Gifford House.  Plus, one of the rooms is being curated by Jimmie Lee Curtis who will be presenting the work from 9 local artists known as ‘her children’.Curtis, known as Mommie Lee, is a fashion designer, but like so many other ‘larger than life locals’, avoids being labelled and is one of those people who so generously spreads their fairy dust everywhere.

Here are details of this year’s ART GAYSEL, plus a video from a much earlier show when we got to chat with Alex Guerra and some of the artists
