We were so wrapped up in watching Andrew Scott’s Oscar-worthy performance starring in the highly anticipated Elsinore at the BFI Film Festival that we almost overlooked his other performance that weekend. The openly gay Irish actor Scott (Handsome Devil, “All of Us Strangers“) stars in It Gets Worse, playing a therapist opposite series creator and star Leo Reich.
The six-part TV comedy series follows Ethan, played by Reich, and his university best friends Abi and Sam, played by Emily Fairn and Olive Gray. A year after moving to London together, the roommates face eviction when their landlord decides to sell their home. From there, the show follows the three friends as they go through their mid-20s, dealing with housing issues, bad jobs, messy relationships, and awkward sex.
A clip released by the BFI London Film Festival shows Reich’s character sitting with Scott in what initially appears to be a therapy session; however, it does not stay professional for long.
“Sorry, I actually have a real client in 15 minutes, so do you want to do this?” Andrew Scott’s character asks, quickly revealing that Ethan is there for something very different. What follows is considerably less suited for work, especially a therapist’s office.
After Ethan takes off his shirt, Scott’s character covers his mouth with a hand. He then slaps Ethan across the face, tells him he is “fine” regarding his mental health, and instructs him to open his mouth, bringing the very NSFW clip to a somewhat comedic though slightly disturbing end.
Scott’s appearance is one of several cameos lined up for It Gets Worse. Alongside Scott, the cast also features Girls creator Lena Dunham, Chicken Shop Date host Amelia Dimoldenberg, Killing Eve actor Sean Delaney, and Normal People star India Mullen, among others.
It Gets Worse will air on Channel 4 in the UK and stream exclusively on Crave in Canada, although an official air date is not yet known.
