GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, which comprises of over 200 gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally entertainment journalists in the U.S., Canada, and U.K. (considerably more than the Holywood Foreign Press Association and arguably much more qualified) has announced its ninth annual Dorian Award winners. Unlike other Movie and Awards handed out, the prestigious Dorians are unique in their approach to being completely inclusive, diverse and fully appreciative of LGBTQ cinema.
Call Me By Your Name was named 2017’s Film of the Year and also earned Timothée Chalamet a Dorian for Film Performance of the Year who was also the group’s Rising Star pick. Plus Michael Stuhlberg who had been strangely absent from the list of nominees of most major Awards picked up a Dorian for Supporting Actor for his stunning performance in Call Me By Your Name.
Jordan Peele, formerly of TV’s acclaimed Key and Peele sketch comedy series, earned Screenplay of the Year for Get Out, and was also crowned Wilde Artist of the Year which he shares with Saturday Night Live fixture Kate McKinnon, nabbing her second win in that race.
queerguru has been proud to be a Member of GALECA for a few years now, and out of this years list of winners, the Award for Unsung Film to God’s Own Country gives us particular pleasure. Arguably the best LGBTQ movie of the year (although not GALECA’s winner) the movie is a prime example of how an excellent indie movie like this struggles so much harder for the acclaim that it deserves without the resources of a major Studio behind it like Sony Pictures Classic.
It was also very heartening to see Robin Campillo’s masterful movie BPM Beats Per Minute France’s seminal movie on the AIDS pandemic win the Dorian Award for Foreign Language Film after being shut out of the Oscar shortlist for the same award.
