Allison Ananis : Tribute to TINA + other new music

This Saturday, March 27, 2021, the Tina Turner documentary will be released on HBO. She tells her story of trauma and survival and her spiritual awakening as a Buddhist. In the early 80’s I listened to the album “Private Dancer” on my boombox incessantly. As a little kid I was enthralled by that raspy voice with big hair and legs for days belting out iconic rock songs – and even more, inspired by a strong black woman who took over the rock & roll world much like the Rolling Stones did in the ’70s. I would put in that cassette tape and listen until I knew every word to every song by heart. I have to admit I got a bit teary-eyed writing this review because I want to be able to honor Tina the only way that she should be honored – A Queen.   (PS You can reed Queerguru’s full review of the doc HERE)

Rising pop singer Kat Cunning released a new single and video “Confident.” Kat, who uses they/them pronouns gets back to their roots as a dancer in this very sensual and edgy video. Kat explains to her fans that “I wrote Confident in a day while in Los Angeles when I was really feeling uncertain about my relationships and needed to ask the people around me to step up. I think it’s an important sentiment for any kind of relationship. Sometimes you have to check in with your parents and friends and roommates as well as your partners and say ‘I know we’re here doing this thing, but in the interest of making it stronger, I want to communicate with you and hear from you how you feel and where you’re at. ‘If you’re not confident – how can I empower you?” I am very much looking forward to witnessing what else is in store for their bright future!

If you haven’t heard already, twenty-three-year-old Jimir Reece Davis (a.k.a Amorphous) is an absolute musical mashup GENIUS. On Thanksgiving, Mr. Davis filmed a video of himself mixing Rihanna’s “Kiss It Better” with Luther Vandross’s “Never Too Much” and it went viral. So much so that it caught the attention of some pretty big music moguls. Fat Joe used the mix on his latest single, “Sunshine,” which was co-produced by Cool of the production team Cool & Dre. The video was shot in Miami and features Fat Joe, Diddy and DJ Khaled on a yacht (Fat Joe rocking his infamous silk-Versace-button-up, of course). Amorphous is on the boat, too, behind a D.J. booth – and doing what he loves to do: mixing music.

A good friend of mine recently introduced me to Morgan Wade’s music. Wade, a 26-year-old newcomer raised in small-town Floyd, Virginia, released her debut record “Reckless” via Nashville label Thirty Tigers. The 10-song collection delivers what its name promises: An unapologetic voice straddling country and rock ‘n’ roll with stories of unbridled and uncensored truth. Reckless revolves around issues like addiction, mental health, and isolation. The track “Last Cigarette” highlights the singer/songwriter’s struggle with addiction intertwined with her struggle to get over a recent relationship. “Addiction is strong, I know it’s wrong. But I need that high, I ain’t gonna lie. Give me tonight. So I can be alright. I can hold your body and you can hold mine. I want you one last time.
