Critically-acclaimed queer theatre-maker Alexis Gregory performs his latest show, FutureQueer, at London’s Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green on 20th and 21st November. The last time he performed this show it sold out, so don’t hang around in booking tickets.
It’s 2069….and the whole world is queer.
Voguing and lip-syncing are categories in the Olympics. There is a statue of George Michael on Hampstead Heath. Forty-six years ago, in 1977, setting out to create the sound of the future, Donna Summer recorded queer anthem I Feel Love. But what will life REALLY be like for queer people in 2069, forty-six years from now?
Armed with a vintage Donna Summer vinyl, Alexis decides to find out.
FutureQueer is part theatre, part stand-up comedy, a DIY queer lecture and a pop-culture excavation. It’s also pretty wild and a bit of a camp-fest. Alexis says “The idea for the show came to me when I was thinking about queer generational differences; thinking what the current experience for a queer sixteen-year-old could currently be. It is likely to be very different to what mine was at that age, but also, what are the similarities? I push this idea further, and explore it within the wider landscape of ‘the future’. Of course, we all like to think how progressive we will be in the years to come, but looking at the current political and social landscape, that may not necessarily be the case. A meditation on disco music as a metaphor for queer survival.”
