It would be A Very English Scandal if Hugh Grant used to be the ex-lover of every one’s favorite openly gay actor Ben Wishaw. BUT this is fiction and although it is based on real life, it’s not their story but that of the ‘straight’ married Liberal party leader Jeremy Thorpe. He was charged with conspiring to commit murder of his former lover Norman Scott who remained around town and threatened to expose his secret. It was a major cause célèbre in 1979 and although to everyone’s complete surprise Thorpe was found not-guilty, it ended his shining political career.
The new miniseries currently being filmed in the UK has a very impressive list of attached to it. Written by openly gay Russell T. Davies (Queer As Folk) and directed by Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (The Queen), and as it is co-produced by Amazon it will thankfully be available in the UK in December and then globally early in 2018. We cannot wait.
