Fred W. McDarrah was a staff photographer for The Village Voice and an author who became famous for documenting the cultural phenomenon known as the Beat Generation from its inception in the 1950s.
His other claim to fame was his whole body of work photographing New York’s’ LGBTQ scene before and after the Stonewall Riots. His unique reportage of that time and the portraits he took of leading figures of the movement and the celebrities of the day still stand as one of the best records we have of that period.
It is the subject of an Exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York that is part of the continuing celebration on the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Entitled PRIDE : Photography of Stonewall and Beyond by Fred W. Darrah it completely captures the spirit and the details of this event and how it shaped the course of gay liberation from then on.
