A major retrospective of the work of celebrated groundbreaking photographer Cindy Sherman that stretches over four decades of her work, will open on June 1st 2016. ‘Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life’ will be the first major exhibition at The Broad which is a stunning new contemporary art museum designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is home to the 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide and includes an extensive portfolio of Sherman’s work which Eli Broad has been accumulating since the early 1980’s
There are over 125 of Sherman’s photographs in the Broads collection making it the single largest one of its kind, and many of them focus on Sherman’s unique examination of filmic stereotypes and of celebrity, starting with the earliest film stills to works she created just last year.
